The Esophagus
The esophagus connects the pharynx to the stomach. Within the esophagus, muscle contractions known as peristalsis occur. These contractions continue throughout the rest of the digestive tract.

The esophagus works in coordination with sphincters, which act as valves. These sphincters allow the access to the stomach for food that has traveled down the esophagus.
