The Stomach
The stomach is the site of the digestion process. The food is received through the sphincter that connects the stomach to the esophagus. Once in the stomach, the food is broken down by enzymes produced by the gastric glands, which produce pepsinogen, hydrochloric acid, and mucus.

The stomach churns the food into a substance known as chyme, which is soft enough to pass into the small intestine.
