Crohn's Disease

Crohn's Disease was first named in 1932 by Dr. Burril Crohn. Crohn's disease is chronic inflammation that occurs most often at the end of the ileum (part of the small intestine that is farthest from the stomach) and the beginning of the colon. However, symptoms can range anywhere from the mouth to the anus.

The causes of Crohn's Disease are still relatively unknown but there have been links to both genetic and environmental factors.

Gene mutations can cause an abnormal regulation of gut bacteria, causing healthy gut bacteria to be attacked. This is not the only way Crohn's can be caused however. Environmental factors such as viruses, poor sanitation, smoking, and diet all have been found to be correlated to the onset of Crohn's.
