GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease

gerd.jpg

GERD is a digestive reflux disease that occurs in the stomach and esophagus of the digestive tract.

The lower esophageal sphincter is located between the stomach and the esophagus, acting as a valve that separates the two. When GERD is apparent, the sphincter never fully closes as it is relaxed due to irritation.

With this relaxation of the sphincter, some gastric juices are able to flow into the esophagus.

GERD in Children

GERD is seen throughout all ages, however it is less likely to be observed with children. 25% of children experience symptoms, but the cases are usually not severe enough to be diagnosed with GERD.

Children who are diagnosed with GERD are more susceptible to complications like esophagitis, esophageal stricture, possible several respiratory problems.

GERD in Adults

On average, 1 in 5 adults will become diagnosed with GERD in their lifetime. Those who are overweight, pregnant, or smokers have increased chances of developing GERD.
