The Large Intestine

Like the small intestine, the large intestine gets its name from its circumference (6.5 cm) rather than its length, being about 1.5 meters.

The large intestine is primarily responsible for the expulsion of waste through the anus.

The large intestine consists of the cecum, a colon, and an appendix.

  • The cecum absorbs nutrients, and also has an appendix attached to it.

  • The appendix functions similarly to the tonsils in acting as a defense against germs and bacteria, however it is not necessary to the vitality of our homeostasis.

  • The colon has four parts

    • The Ascending Colon

      • Travels up the right side of the body

    • The Transverse Colon

      • Crosses below the liver and the stomach

    • The Descending Colon

      • Travels down the left side of the body

    • The Sigmoid Colon

      • Enters into the rectum
